UVA Commemorates June 12

On this day, June 12, 1993, Nigerians rose above ethnic, religious, and regional divides to participate in what remains the freest and fairest election in our nation’s history. It was a profound expression of unity, hope, and the democratic will of the people — a mandate overwhelmingly entrusted to Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.

The annulment of the June 12 election stands as one of the gravest injustices ever committed against the Nigerian people. Many lives were lost, many were maimed, imprisoned, or forced into exile. No amount of whitewashing or revisionism can erase the truth or the deep scars left by this betrayal.

Today, we remember and honour the heroes who paid the ultimate price in the struggle to actualize that democratic vision. Their courage and sacrifice laid the groundwork for the freedoms we continue to pursue.

At Unchained Vibes Africa, we affirm that a thriving democracy is a fundamental prerequisite for artistic freedom. Where democracy falters, artists and creatives who use their voices to demand justice and accountability remain vulnerable to suppression and censorship.

June 12 is more than a date — it is a symbol of our collective aspiration for justice, equity, and true democracy.

Let us honour its legacy by defending these ideals with renewed commitment, and by ensuring that the voices of the people — in art, in activism, and in everyday life — are never silenced again.
