1000 Poets for Change: UVA and CAC close LABAF with Voter Education and Mobilization

The 24th edition of the annual Lagos Book and Art Festival (LABAF), organized by the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA), ended on Sunday 20th of November 2022 with 1000 Poets for Change show at the Freedom Park in Lagos. The show was produced by Unchained Vibes Africa (UVA) in partnership with Culture Advocates Caucus (CAC). With the theme Politically Motivated towards 2023 Elections, the show provided a creative platform for voter education, mobilization and general civic engagement by attendees of the festival.

Unchained Vibes calls on the police to embrace dialogue with artists

The Executive Producer of Unchained Vibes Africa, Ayodele Ganiu, has called on the Nigerian Police Force not to enforce its new policy aimed at prosecuting movie and skit makers for using police uniform or portraying the police institution in movies and comedy skits without authorization. Speaking at the Youth and Policing Summit for southwest region hosted by the Network on Police Reforms in Nigeria (NOPRIN) in Lagos from 31st October – 1st November 2022, Ayodele advised the Police to change their approach from coercing artists to embracing dialogue. He noted that skit makers and filmmakers have massive followers and can be strategic partners with the police in improving the relationship between the police and the people, especially the youth, if properly engaged.

Yahaya Sharif Aminu: Unchained Vibes expresses disappointment at the Appeal Court’s Ruling

Unchained Vibes Africa joins the Foundation for Religious Freedom in describing the unfortunate ruling of the Appeal Court which upholds the High Court’s decision to remit Yahaya Sharif-Aminu back to the Upper Shariah Court for retrial as disappointing. Yesterday, the 17th August 2022, two of the three judges on the panel set up by the Court of Appeal, Kano, upheld the Kano High Court’s earlier decision ordering a re-trial of the case of singer Yahaya Sharif-Aminu at the Upper Shariah Court. Justice Abubakar Lamido delivered the judgment via a Zoom video conference. However, there was a dissenting judgment by Justice Ita Mbaba. Justice Mbaba argued that the singer be discharged and acquitted. The justices also upheld the High Court’s decision on the legality of Shariah blasphemy laws with one exception; they held that Section 10 of the Constitution is justiciable.

Freedom Vibes Poetry Concert Report

On April 30, 2022, at the end of the Democracy Vibes Summit organized by Unchained Vibes Africa, a special edition of Freedom Vibes Series was hosted – the Freedom Vibes Poetry Concert. The concert brought together leading Nigerian spoken word poets for a convergence with Afro-pop musicians to promote freedom of expression. It featured the best of performance poets in Nigeria including Dike Chuwumerije, Sage Hassan, RezThaPoet, Iquo Diana-Abasi and the invigorating spirit of the fast rising Victory Ashaka.

On Saturday, 30th April 2022, Democracy Vibes, a summit on censorship and artistic freedom, was organized by Unchained Vibes Africa at the Freedom Park in Lagos. It was a hybrid event with many delegates physically in attendance and others participating virtually via Zoom webinar. The theme of the summit "Protecting Creativity through Participatory Reforms" inspired meaningful policy dialogues and debates among stakeholders and delegates revolving around censorship, actions and inactions of state and non-state actors as well as laws and regulations hindering artistic freedom in Nigeria.

The Democracy Vibes: a one-day summit on censorship and artistic freedom as well as Freedom Vibes 5.0, a poetry concert.

The summit is bringing together musicians, filmmakers, theatre practitioners, comedians, poets, cultural policy experts and other practitioners in the Nigerian creative sector as well as civil society organizations to facilitate meaningful dialogue with government officials on the need for policy reforms that will address issues and concerns around recent government actions and policies that may undermine creativity and threaten artistic freedom.
