Freedom Vibes with Wole Soyinka.

Unchained Vibes Africa’s (UVA’s) program team on Wednesday 20th March 2024 had a robust interactive session with renowned Nigerian playwright, poet, essayist, and first Sub-Saharan African to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, Prof Wole Soyinka. The engagement with the man widely considered one of the world’s most distinguished writers and intellectuals is part of UVA’s Freedom Vibes, a series of events geared towards promoting artists’ freedom of expression, and the use of music and arts for civic engagement.

Prof Soyinka, an active voice and foremost activist in the struggle for democracy, human rights, and social justice, graciously addressed a host of pertinent issues relating to artistic freedom violations in Nigeria with a particular focus on the Blasphemy case involving Yahaya Sharif Aminu, an upcoming singer sentenced to death in Kano for expressing his religious belief.

Prof Soyinka, throughout his life, has used his writings, speaking engagements, and activism to challenge political corruption and authoritarian regimes in Nigeria.
