UVA Statement on the Kano Court’s Order Compelling Two TikTok Creators to Marry

Unchained Vibes Africa (UVA) condemns the recent ruling by a Kano magistrate court ordering two TikTok content creators Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda to marry within 60 days over videos described as “indecent.” The videos in question are fictional works of art, creative performances that should be viewed as expressions of imagination and not moral misconduct.
Artistic expression, including digital skits and storytelling, must not be criminalized or used as grounds for coercive punishment. Forcing marriage as a remedy not only undermines personal freedom and consent but also sets a dangerous precedent for artistic censorship and misuse of judicial authority.
We urge the Kano State government, the judiciary and the censorship board to uphold the constitutional right to freedom of expression and to engage cultural stakeholders in constructive dialogue on responsible creativity rather than resorting to punitive or repressive measures.
Unchained Vibes Africa stands firmly with artists and creators whose work advances dialogue, imagination and cultural innovation.
