Celebrating 5 Years of Freedom Vibes: Art as a Catalyst for Change

Today, July 1, 2026, marks a momentous milestone: the 5th anniversary of Freedom Vibes, the flagship initiative of Unchained Vibes Africa (UVA). Over the past five years, Freedom Vibes has been unwavering in its dedication to advancing artistic freedom and defending the rights of artists.

At UVA, we believe in a thriving Africa where artists are free, empowered and influential drivers of positive social change. While our ambition and vision remain steadfastly pan-African, the achievements of these first five years have been largely focused on Nigeria, serving as a powerful foundation and blueprint for our broader continental mission. Freedom Vibes has embodied our vision by operating at the intersection of art for social transformation, advocacy for artistic freedom and digital innovation.

Five Years of Measurable Impact

The success of Freedom Vibes is built upon four interlinked pillars: Monitoring & Documentation, the Freedom Vibes Academy, the Freedom Vibes Concert Series and the Freedom Vibes Summit. Through these channels, we have achieved incredible milestones:

  • Mass Mobilizations & Engagements: We have hosted 9 Freedom Vibes concerts, engaging over 5,000 in-person attendees and drawing more than 4.3 million online engagements.
  • Vigilant Monitoring: Our team has received and monitored more than 240 complaints from artists and reviewed over 6,000 media reports.
  • Actionable Advocacy: We have executed more than 50 advocacy campaigns and documented over 280 verified violations of artistic freedom.
  • Global Solidarity: We have mobilized and collaborated with over 200 local, regional and international organizations for high-stakes campaigns, including the fight for the release of the wrongfully convicted singer Yahaya Sharif Aminu, who was sentenced to death.
  • Digital Innovation: In 2025, we launched the viral TikTok protest song remix campaign called #TellYourPapa to combat censorship, which amassed over 420,000 engagements and sparked national discourse.
  • Legal Pushbacks & Strategic Litigation: Through Freedom Vibes, we have provided targeted legal assistance to artists at risk across 8 critical cases, relentlessly navigating adjournments and procedural hurdles that resulted in over 37 court appearances by UVA lawyers and our northern representative. This crucial advocacy includes supporting the death sentence appeal of the wrongfully convicted singer Yahaya Sharif Aminu. We have pursued strategic public interest litigation to establish binding legal precedents, notably securing a landmark High Court judgment in January 2025 that quashed unlawful criminal charges against filmmaker Hajiya Amart. Through our consistent advocacy and collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association Media & Creativity Committee, we challenged the illegal imposition of police approval requirements for artistic depictions of law enforcement, successfully averting mass arrests of skit makers.
  • Policy Reform: Driven by our relentless advocacy for standard classification over subjective moral censorship, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) is currently transitioning and renaming its official name and operations from a “censors board” to a “classification board”. We also co-submitted a joint report to the UN Human Rights Council for the Universal Periodic Review, pushing for essential reforms to Nigeria’s censorship and blasphemy laws.
Global Recognition and Awards

The impact of Freedom Vibes has reverberated beyond our borders, earning UVA prestigious recognitions on the global stage:

  • 2026 Bertha Artivism Award Winner: In recognition of our pioneering track record, UVA was named a 2026 winner. This global honour celebrates our use of art as a catalyst for social justice, systemic change and community mobilization.
  • 2026 Global Arts Prize for Innovation Nomination: We were nominated for advancing innovation through creative practice, receiving an official nomination certificate from the Global Leaders Institute.
  • 2025 Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression Awards Shortlist: UVA was shortlisted for this prestigious award, which recognizes significant impact in fighting censorship. The recognition highlights our success in monitoring and documenting censorship cases, our local and international mobilizations and powerful interventions in high-profile artistic freedom cases in Nigeria.

This journey of empowering artists as agents of social transformation would be impossible without the collective effort of our community.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the artists, activists, legal experts and all stakeholders who continuously engage in vital dialogues at our Freedom Vibes events. We send a special thank you to the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) for their unwavering support, alongside all our other international partners, including Artists at Risk Connection, Freemuse, PEN International, and Nhimbe Trust. Thank you for your steadfast collaboration and for helping us bridge local talent with global expertise.

To the passionate young artists in the Freedom Vibes Academy, our growing alumni network, and every individual who has attended our advocacy concert or shared a campaign: thank you. Together, you are helping us foster an inclusive, just and vibrant society where the arts serve as a powerful catalyst for positive change.

Finally, to the unsung heroes behind these milestones, the incredible UVA program team, both past and present: Your resilience, passion and tireless dedication behind the scenes are the true engines of Freedom Vibes. Thank you for fighting the good fight and making this vision a reality every single day.
