COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF FREEDOM VIBES SUMMIT ON THE THEME “SAFEGUARDING CREATIVITY ON DIGITAL PLATFORMS”

On Thursday, 30th May 2024, Unchained Vibes Africa in collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association’s Media and Creativity Committee, hosted the Freedom Vibes Summit on the theme "Safeguarding Creativity on Digital Platforms". It was a hybrid event with most delegates physically in attendance at the Freedom Park in Lagos while others participated virtually via Zoom webinar. The event was attended by delegates from across Nigeria and beyond, representing various fields of the creative sector, civil society organizations (CSOs) and relevant government agencies. Stakeholders in attendance included filmmakers, skit makers, lawyers, musicians, actors, content creators, representative of the police and other government officials.

Safeguarding Creativity on Digital Platforms at the UVA Freedom Vibes Summit

• The Purpose of the Summit is to bring together skit-makers, filmmakers, musicians, theatre practitioners, comedians, poets, cultural policy experts and other practitioners in the Nigerian creative sector and civil society organizations to facilitate meaningful dialogue with government officials on the need for policy reforms that will address the issues and concerns around recent government actions and policies that may undermine creativity and threaten artistic freedom.

Strengthening Advocacy Through Arts at Freedom Vibes 8.0

The event, through a robust panel session, critically examined women’s participation in driving social change using different art forms. Featuring an all-female panel comprising emerging and mid-career artists and advocates, while calling for more involvement, the event honoree Ms Sola Alamutu (Green Queen) was the reference point. Unchained Vibes Africa's (UVA's) program team on Wednesday 20th March 2024 had a robust interactive session with renowned Nigerian playwright, poet, essayist, and first Sub-Saharan African to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, Prof Wole Soyinka.The engagement with the man widely considered one of the world's most distinguished writers and intellectuals is part of UVA's Freedom Vibes, a series of events geared towards promoting artists' freedom of expression, and the use of music and arts for civic engagement.

Legendary actress Taiwo Ajai-Lycett Inspires Graduands of the UVA Freedom Vibes Academy in Lagos

On Saturday 17th February 2024, Unchained Vibes Africa (UVA), graduated 11 participants of the 2023/2024 edition of the UVA Freedom Vibes Academy out of the initial 16 selected artists for the programme. Participants comprised young and emerging socially conscious artists who were drawn from the six geo-political zones in Nigeria. The graduation ceremony was the grand finale of a yearlong academy programme which began on January 16th, 2023, at the Adumaadan Gallery in Magodo GRA Phase 2, Lagos. The opening ceremony attracted the crème-de-la-crème in the Nigerian creative space including renowned human right lawyers, experts and artists like: Eedris Abdulkareem, Seun Kuti, Norbert Young, Kolawole Oluwadare, Cynthia Mbamalu, Dr. Tunji Sotimirin, to mention but a few, who were on hand to facilitate different sessions for 3 (three) consecutive days.

The Salzburg Statement on Supporting Artists on the Front Line

Last year, Unchained Vibes Africa was represented at the Salzburg Global Seminar session ‘On the Front Lines: Artists at Risk, Artists who Risk’, where fifty artists, activists and representatives from supporting organisations which cut across forty countries created the Salzburg Statement on Supporting Artists on the Front Line. The Statement is a concise document including definitions of artists at risk, artists who are persecuted due to their artwork, artists as activists or human rights defenders. It includes considerations and reflections for and on those who support art and artists at risk such as policymakers, funders, institutions, organisations in both arts and human rights sectors. The Statement clearly outlines demands and recommendations as well as a three-point call for action by the end of 2025 on the part of policymakers, funders, stakeholders and networks.
