Court Restrains Kano Censors Board from Prosecuting Filmmaker Hajiya Amart

Unchained Vibes Africa (UVA) is pleased to announce a significant progress in its advocacy for reforms in government actions and policies that hinder artistic freedom in Nigeria. In a suit filed by the filmmaker and supported by UVA (Suit No K/M2044/2024), Kano State High Court, presided over by Justice Adam Abdullahi, on Wednesday 13th November 2024, restrained the Kano State Censorship Board and Chief Magistrate Court 60 Kano, from interfering with the operations of Kannywood filmmaker Hajiya Aisha Amart. The Court also granted leave to the filmmaker to apply for an order of certiorari to remove, for the purpose of its being quashed, the Accused Summons dated 13th February 2024 issued against the filmmaker by the Magistrate Court. The case was adjourned to 26th November 2024 for hearing of the Originating Summons.

UVA to Defend Kano TikToker’s Artistic Freedom

Unchained Vibes Africa (UVA) is set to support Kano-based TikToker Badoo in an ongoing legal battle over his creative content. Badoo recently appeared in court, pleading not guilty to charges brought against him by the Kano State Censorship Board. The board claims that he violated censorship laws through content posted on his YouTube channel.

The Forum brought together key players in the creative sector and relevant government agencies to address the state of artistic freedom and challenges faced by artists in Kano state. Stakeholders recognized the transformative power of music, film, poetry, and other artistic expressions while UVA amplified the voices of members of the artistic community and articulated the importance of artistic freedom in this process.

On Thursday, 30th May 2024, Unchained Vibes Africa in collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association’s Media and Creativity Committee, hosted the Freedom Vibes Summit on the theme "Safeguarding Creativity on Digital Platforms". It was a hybrid event with most delegates physically in attendance at the Freedom Park in Lagos while others participated virtually via Zoom webinar. The event was attended by delegates from across Nigeria and beyond, representing various fields of the creative sector, civil society organizations (CSOs) and relevant government agencies. Stakeholders in attendance included filmmakers, skit makers, lawyers, musicians, actors, content creators, representative of the police and other government officials.

Strengthening Advocacy Through Arts at Freedom Vibes 8.0

The event, through a robust panel session, critically examined women’s participation in driving social change using different art forms.
