This suppression is largely characterized by arbitrary arrests, formal censorship and systemic intimidation tactics directed at voices perceived as critical or dissenting.

- Arbitrary Arrest of Skit Makers in Taraba State: On March 19, 2026, state authorities arbitrarily arrested and detained digital comedians notably including “Dr Slim” and “Gospel Alhaji”. As reported by Sahara Reporters, this action was executed on the direct orders of Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas. The arrest served as a retaliatory measure against their creative content, stemming from a satirical skit that criticized, mocked or offended the state’s political establishment. The criminalization of comedy and political satire in this manner constitutes a severe violation of artistic freedom.
- Systemic Censorship of Musical Events in Kano State: On March 18, 2026, the Kano State Censorship Board issued a blanket threat of sanctions and prosecution against anyone organizing musical events or entertainment shows without prior official approval. According to reports from Daily Post, while this directive was framed under the guise of ensuring that Eid-el-Fitr festivities were conducted in a “morally acceptable manner,” it functioned as a mechanism to use state power to enforce prior restraint, effectively banning unapproved artistic performances during the holidays.
